Eligibility Requirements
The Union Plus Education Foundation Scholarship Program is open to current and retired members of participating unions, their spouses, and their dependent children (as defined by IRS regulations). To qualify for the scholarship, the applicant, their spouse, or parent (if the applicant is a dependent) must have at least one year of continuous union membership by May 31 of the scholarship year. Evaluation Criteria
Applicants for the scholarship program are evaluated based on academic ability, social awareness, financial need, and appreciation of labor. To maximize their chances of being selected, applicants should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Required essays can account for up to 50% of the total score. An impartial committee of post-secondary educators evaluates all scholarship applicants.
Application Timeline
The application for the scholarship program is available from mid-June, and applicants must submit a complete application by 12:00 p.m. (Noon) Eastern Standard Time on 31st January 2024 of the scholarship year. Applications received after this deadline will not be considered.
Scholarship Award Amounts
Scholarship awards for the Union Plus Education Foundation Scholarship Program range from $500 to $4,000 and they are one-time cash awards for study beginning in the Fall of 2024. Students may reapply each year.
Isaiah’s Award
The Isaiah’s Award is named in honor of Isaiah C., a beloved child who was fostered and adopted by a current, long-time employee of Union Plus. Applicants for this award must have a special connection to the foster care system and describe their personal, employment, volunteer experiences, or career goals related to the foster care system in their application.
Award Date
The Scholarship Committee will determine scholarship award recipients by May 31 each year. Award recipients will be notified by mail during the first week of June, and all applicants will receive an email with notification that the award list is posted. Please note that no information about the status of an application can be provided before award announcements are made due to the volume of applications received.
